Welcome to the ESA Innovation Triangle Initiative (ITI)!

The 2017 round of ITI proposal submissions is now CLOSED. All information related to the submission of proposals to ITI can be found on ESA EMITS (AO8876)

This ITI website will no longer be used for proposal submissions to ITI.

All future proposal submissions to ITI will be via ESA-STAR

A new Invitation to Tender (ITT) for ITI proposal submissions has been be issued on ESA EMITS.

The ITI website can still be used to contact ESA experts (except during open tendering periods) and to access general information related to the ITI programme.

Please note that the ITI website is for information only. None of the information or access to the ITI website is required for the ITI tendering process. Any questions to the Agency related to the tendering process shall be made exclusively via the dedicated function in ESA-STAR and addressed to the responsible Contracts Officer.

If you have new ideas for products, processes or services, which are potential candidates for technology innovation to be used in space applications, then submitting proposals to ITI is in your best interest.

ITI supports the identification, validation and development of disruptive space innovations based on new ideas or concepts, giving preference to innovations coming originally from non-space industrial or research sectors. The submitters of these ideas or concepts are supported by ITI with seed-money, technical support and networking contacts aiming at combining the creativity, know-how and experience of the Research Community, Space Customers and Industry.

In this context, ITI can provide:

  •  Seed-Money - 50k€, 175k€ or higher depending on the type of activity.
  •  Technical Support - Submitters can contact ESA experts to discuss proposal concepts and verify their relevance and applicability to space.
Submitters with a limited experience in developing technologies for space are also encouraged to download and read the following Space Specifications Checklist document.
  •  Networking (building the "Innovation Triangle") - through the links provided, submitters have the opportunity of finding potential partners thus facilitating the validation, development and utilization of innovative ideas.
ITI is based on the "Innovation Triangle" concept stating that a rapid and successful introduction of disruptive innovations in Industry requires the collaboration of three different entities: a CUSTOMER, a DEVELOPER and an INVENTOR

Two types of contract activities are foreseen within the ITI, focused on the element of the "Innovation Triangle":

    •  Proof of concept (for inventors): fast validation of new ideas and demonstration of its advantages.
    •  Demonstration of feasibility and use (for developers): component and/or breadboard development up to validation in laboratory

Interested users may download the relevant ITI tender documents from ESA EMITS.

Companies, universities and research organisations belonging to ESA Member States are invited to submit innovative proposals for these type of activities concerning any technical domain relevant to space applications.
